Teaching
I’ve taught on courses and workshops at a wide variety of universities, adult education institutes, literary festivals etc but at the moment I am only teaching for the University of Bristol.
Fiction Writing Workshop
This friendly and supportive class aims to inspire, encourage and nurture you as a prose fiction writer, whether you’re a beginner or already published. Writing exercises and practical advice will help in developing characters and plots and improving style and structure. The emphasis is on the craft aspects of writing and the ‘workshopping’ process where each student reads out their own work for discussion and feedback. Fridays in Bath.
Diploma in Creative Writing
The Diploma explores a variety of modes of writing, including poetry, fiction, playwriting, children's writing and non-fiction. Literary texts from different periods are read and analysed from a writer's perspective. The course also covers practicalities such as presentation skills, editing, publishing and performing, and aims to introduce various achievable methods of displaying and disseminating original work. The course aims to encourage students' aspirations to produce work which is ultimately publishable. An important component of the course is the opportunity to work with established writers. Two year part-time course.
